THE SENSORS CLUSTER

Providing Value:
Participants and Facilities

More than 200-plus individuals representing more than 50 participating companies, six regional institutions, and 21 local, regional, state and federal agencies and national laboratories are involved with the Sensors Cluster.

Our multi-university coalition provides access to numerous state-of-the-art research facilities at member institutions and an additional 29 laboratories co-located at the Applied Research Center in Newport News, Virginia.

Sensors Cluster partners include two internationally acclaimed federal laboratories – Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, or Jefferson Laboratory, and NASA Langley Research Center – as well as the United States Joint Forces Command and the National Institute of Aerospace.

Among our affiliated military and governmental organizations are:

  • The United States Department of Homeland Security
  • Virginia’s Office of Commonwealth Preparedness
  • The Federal Laboratory Consortium
  • The Naval Surface Warfare Center at Dahlgren
  • The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration
  • Virginia’s Center for Innovative Technology

Getting Involved:
Interaction and Information Exchange

A well-developed and highly active sensor and sensor-processes community enable Sensors Cluster members to routinely network, exchange information and to create funding opportunities.

Advisory mailings regarding funding opportunities, meetings, conferences and news of note are regular and frequent.

Members are invited to attend at least four sensors-related workshops and seminars per year.

There exist strong crosslinks to the Modeling & Simulation and BioSciences Clusters and to the Hampton Roads Technology Council’s Sensor Science and Technology Forum.

Amplifying Collaboration:
A Regional Research Partnership

The Sensors Cluster is part of the Hampton Roads Research Partnership (HRRP), a synergistic collaboration that involves

  • Seven distinctive universities and colleges,
  • Two acclaimed federal research laboratories,
  • A medical school with world-renowned programs, and
  • A leader in applied aerospace technologies and education

The Research Partnership

  • Coordinates research efforts
  • Leverages partner institutions’ state-of-the-art facilities
  • Engages the intellectual capital of 2,000 HRRP-affiliated scientists and engineers

HRRP is funded by its members and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration.
