THE MODELING & SIMULATION CLUSTER
Providing Value:
Participants and Facilities
Modeling & Simulation (M&S) Cluster partners include more than 100 industry, government and academic members, with 40 M&S Cluster members focusing specifically on economic development activities.
The M&S Cluster is divided into subclusters, each of which focuses on applying M&S to the following disciplines:
- Military/Homeland Security
- Medical
- Transportation
- Game-based Learning
- Social Science
- Computational Science/Robotics
- Enterprise Engineering
The M&S cluster is led by the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC) at Old Dominion University.
The primary VMASC facility in Suffolk, Virginia was formally dedicated on April 9, 2008 and contains 11,000 square feet of research and laboratory space.
One wing of the new VMASC building is set aside for offices, offering an incentive to small business to transition research to commercial use. Tenants have already begun to lease space.
Getting Involved:
Interaction and Information Exchange
The Modeling & Simulation Cluster has frequent interaction with its membership and numerous, ongoing collaborations that pertain to each M&S subcluster, as well as routine exchange with the Research Partnership BioScience and Sensors Clusters.
Regular meetings are ongoing with local, regional and national industry and government to assess status of projects and programs, to exchange information and to create funding opportunities.
In September 2007 the Hampton Roads region sponsored a conference called ModSimWorld that attracted more than 600 attendees. The ModSimWorld gathering will take place annually to promote the region’s M&S capability and to attract business.
Amplifying Collaboration:
A Regional Research Partnership
The Modeling & Simulation Cluster is part of the Hampton Roads Research Partnership (HRRP), a synergistic collaboration that involves
- Seven distinctive universities and colleges,
- Two acclaimed federal research laboratories,
- A medical school with world-renowned programs, and
- A leader in applied aerospace technologies and education
The Research Partnership
- Coordinates research efforts
- Leverages partner institutions’ state-of-the-art facilities
- Engages the intellectual capital of 2,000 HRRP-affiliated scientists and engineers
HRRP is funded by its members and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration.
